The history and developmnt of the art of Ju-jitsu is an enormouse subject, and this short paper will only seek to ouline the most important topics in its long past. It will take a chronological approach to th etopic, dividing its attention between three themes: the evolution of the physical component of the art, the cultural and political context in which it existed, and the philosophical and moral values with which it was associated. The paper is titled "Aspects" of the history of Ju Jitsu to suggest that many of its conclusions are tentative: the author does not know Japanese, the language of the original sources, and he has only a novice's knowledge of the art itself.
