Having passed the 1st Kyu grade examination, you will have started on your journey to becoming an instructor. Before you reach the time of your shodan examination you will already be under close observation from your Sensei and other interested parties.
As a 1st Kyu brown belt certain responsibilities are placed on you, not only for yourself but for the school and the students of that school. You will have to prove to yourself and to everyone around you, that once you gain your shodan you will be able to perform your duties with confidence. This does not happen just because you pass your shodan grade, you have to practice these skills from the time you become a brown belt.
You will be expected to help with the running of a class, and through this build your skills and confidence as an instructor, you will have to ascert yourself to others, making them aware of the responsibilities you have, you will have to overcome your instinct to stay in the ranks and set yourself apart from your fellow students, this is not to say you are better but make them aware of the position you now hold and the task that lies ahead. This may seem a difficult time for you, but you are not alone.

You will have the full support of your sensei's who will be there to advise and encourage you in your endeavours to achieve your goal. If this is not enough you still have to find the time to carry on your own training, pushing yourself both physically and mentally in readiness for the shodan examination. Everything required of you in this exam is already inside of you, otherwise you would not be where you are now. It is now time to perfect the skills and knowledge you have acquired over the many years of training, and prepare yourself for what lies ahead. The shodan grading examination that you must pass in order to become a qualified Ju-Jitsu instructor is a very demanding course, being the final stepping stone in your apprenticeship. Look upon your grading not just as an examination of your capabilities, but as an opportunity to portray the beauty and grace, yet lethalness of Ju-Jitsu.
To obtain such an achievement as Shodan you must persevere to the end.
